With Mono tables, however, we have extended the boundaries of what it is now possible to produce in this way. Lilla Åland is a real stalwart in the Stolab range and a favourite that has represented excellent Swedish 20th century design on many occasions. Carl Malmsten was inspired by a visit to the Finnström Church on Åland, which contained a number of stick-back chairs lined up. He drew them and after a few of his own adjustments and additions, typical of his own particular style, serial production could commence. Each back pin is grooved at both ends, providing a larger attachment area for the glue, thus increasing durability. The narrowing of the back pins upwards forms a strong, springy and comfortable back support. The hollowed top section further increases comfort. Recessed seat for greater comfort. Hippo chair in lacquered wood combines a traditional Swedish look with a generous portion of light-hearted modernity. Hippo is ideal as a café chair or in a restaurant. Hippo’s journey began when Mia Gammelgaard asked if we wanted to produce her contribution to the Danish Cabinetmakers’ Autumn Exhibition, “White-Out”. “Of course!” we said and embarked on the project without a moment’s delay.
